Outdoor Thanksgiving Options in South Florida

We know making Thanksgiving plans during the pandemic is tough, but if you decide you just can’t bear the thought of cooking this year, we’ve collected a few safer outdoor dining alternatives across South Florida. Let someone else do the cooking and the cleaning. And while other states shiver in the cold of late November, you can enjoy comfortable outdoor dining as it should be in the 70s this year!

Palm Beach County:
Farmer’s Table in both Boca Raton and North Palm Beach is offering a three-course Thanksgiving meal with seating for 100 people outside. Farmer’s Table is known for clean, farm-to-table ingredients - fresh food without the addition of excess fat or salt. This year, both locations are offering Thanksgiving orders “to go” and convenient online ordering. If you do decide to eat at the restaurant, reservations are recommended. Book reservations online.

You might’ve been to a wedding at The Sundy House in Delray, but did you know they’re also doing a special Thanksgiving menu this year. If you haven’t been to the Sundy House, you’re missing out on a beautiful South Florida gem. It’s a historic inn nestled in a unique tropical garden. Sundy House seating is mostly open air with a backdrop of its gorgeous gardens. This year, they’re offering a classic Thanksgiving buffet feast with seating for over 200 outside. You can make reservations through Open Table.

Enjoy a waterfront Thanksgiving at Waterstone Resort & Marina in Boca Raton. Highlights include: Pumpkin Bisque, Hand Carved Turkey, Roasted Stuffed Acorn Squash, Honey Glazed Ham, Pumpkin Pie and so much more. Outdoor seating with a fantastic view of Lake Boca is available for parties of all sizes. Advance reservations are required. Call 561-368-9500.

Broward County:
Galuppi’s Restaurant & Patio Bar in Pompano Beach is open on Thanksgiving with a one price event that covers salad, appetizer, entree and dessert with plenty of seating on the outside patio-terrace. A delicious menu and a beautiful view of the Pompano Greens - all at a reasonable price. Galuppi’s also offers “Thanksgiving To Go” - a package that serves 8-10 people, oven-ready and available for pick up. Call 954-785-0226 with questions or to make reservations.

At Blue Moon Fish Company in Fort Lauderdale, over 200 people can sit outside and enjoy the beautiful views of the Intracoastal. A traditional Thanksgiving all-day buffet will be available along with salads and dessert offerings. They’re known as Fort Lauderdale’s “freshest seafood by the waterway” and their brunch buffets typically include bottomless Champagne, mimosas and Bloody Marys. Reservations are available through Open Table.

If eating turkey while watching yachts sail by sounds like the perfect Thanksgiving, consider GG’s Waterfront. With covered outdoor seating, a fixed price menu and a family-style option, Thanksgiving at this Hollywood treasure is another delicious option. GG’s is also offers “Thanksgiving at Home” with full meals available for pickup. Seating on Turkey Day begins at 11am; call to reserve a table at 954-929-7030.

Shooters Waterfront in Fort Lauderdale has seating for 350 people outside. They are opening the Grateful Palate, their special event space, essentially turning that area into a covered patio (for an additional 100 seats). They are offering an all-you-can-eat buffet with plexiglass shields and stations manned by attentive staff. All of your traditional holiday favorites will be available. Shooters Waterfront has been a South Florida icon since 1982 with excellent food and beautiful views of the Intracoastal. Open Table is taking reservations for this restaurant.

Miami Dade County:
Smith and Wollensky Steakhouse in Miami Beach is offering a four-course traditional Thanksgiving meal. This eatery is offering a socially-distanced meal with ample waterfront outdoor seating. You can also order online for pickup. Located directly on the Government Cut, in South Pointe Park, the views are unbeatable. Online reviews agree that the service is fantastic! Reservations are available through Open Table.

How about celebrating Thanksgiving with mouth-watering Italian food? Fiola Miami in Coral Gables is offering a Celebration of Thanksgiving with a 4-course menu of gourmet Italian favorites including offerings like meatballs, lobster ravioli and risotto. Of course, turkey is available as a main course as well. Fiola has been recognized as a “Top 7 Pick” for Outdoor Dining in Miami (by Miami Curated) with a large veranda that has been retooled for social distancing. Make your reservations with Open Table.

The former Versace Mansion is now home to Gianni’s at the Villa Casa Casuarina. They’re offering a prix fixe (one price) four-course Thanksgiving menu served poolside or in the courtyard. It’s a unique, upscale dining experience sure to be a memorable one. Call 786-485-2200 for reservations or try Open Table.

Inside the THēsis Hotel Miami, in the heart of Coral Gables, you’ll find another unique dining experience in a restaurant called Mamey. Mamey Miami, with Chef Niven Patel, is known for exotic flavors and spices from the islands in Asia, Polynesia and the Caribbean. Prepare yourself for funky twists to old favorites and Thanksgiving flavors in new dishes. There is plenty of social distant seating on a covered outdoor patio. Open Table is taking reservations at Mamey.

If Thanksgiving on the sands of South Beach is right up your alley, maybe reserve a table at Nikki Beach on Ocean Drive. You can literally eat with your toes in the sand, watching the waves roll in. Nikki Beach is offering traditional holiday dishes and their specialty holiday sangria from noon to 6pm on Thanksgiving Day. Reservations are available at Open Table.

No matter what you choose this holiday season, we hope you are healthy and safe. And when you’re ready to treat yourself to better German-engineering, we hope you’ll remember your friends at VW South Florida. Looking for a great deal on a new Volkswagen? Find a location near you.

2021_ID4

The 2021 Volkswagen ID4 is Awesome!

The All-New Volkswagen ID4 is almost here! It’s the first of VW’s lineup of electric vehicles to be sold in the United States (The ID 3 is sold in Europe). The new SUV is set to start under $40,000 - and, with a potential federal tax credit - could cost significantly less. Volkswagen estimates it will get 250 miles of range. They say that it can charge up to 33 miles in about an hour (or 7.5 hours to fully charge) at home or at a public Level 2 (240-volt) charger.

The ID4 also features what Volkswagen calls the ID.Light. Not unlike “KITT” of Knight Rider fame, the ID.Light is an intuitive light bar that runs across the dashboard as a means of communication. It telegraphs incoming calls, brake warnings and charge status. Other state-of-the-art features include “Intuitive Start” - the electric vehicle senses your presence and “wakes up” automatically, starting the car for you when you touch the door handle.

The ID4 will come with 3 years of unlimited charging at “Electrify America DC Fast Chargers” at no additional cost. There are Electrify America charging stations throughout South Florida from the Dadeland Mall to Glades Road in Boca and a bunch of places in between. But there are hundreds more non-E.A. charging stations available too. Check plugshare.com to find the stations near you. Most stations (and home chargers) are Level 2, but there are Level 3 “DC” Fast Charging stations (480-volt) also available across the country. With a Level 3 charging station, you can expect 60 miles in about 10 minutes or an 80% charge in 30 minutes. Level 3 chargers aren’t available for home installation.

IQ.Drive is standard on the all-new ID4. It provides advanced drivers assistance features including Travel Assist, Lane Assist, Front Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control, Emergency Assist, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert. Most of these features offer hands-on semi-autonomous capability with the means to keep the vehicle in its lane or slow it down when it senses another vehicle ahead.

ID4-dashboard

The 12” touchscreen display functions as a central hub equipped with smart features like interactive navigation, climate control and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. There’s also wireless charging and VW’s Car-Net app. The tech is even more advanced with voice commands triggered by “Hello ID,” and most physical buttons have been replaced with responsive touch-sensitive controls. Motor Trend describes the infotainment system as “more user-friendly than ever.”

As far as performance is concerned, one cnet reviewer calls it, “...pretty fun to drive.” He describes it as feeling like a “turbocharged, gas-powered CUV,” explaining that it won’t be too jarring of an experience shifting from a gas powered vehicle to electric. The motor has 201 horsepower and up to 228 lb. ft. of torque and is capable of towing up to 2700 pounds. Overall, reviewers compliment the layout, comfort and space and enjoy the sense of quality.

The all-new 2021 Volkswagen ID4 is available to build and reserve online now, but if you’d like to test drive before you buy, please contact a VW dealer near you.

pandemic-halloween

A Very Pandemic Halloween

This year, Halloween in South Florida is going to look a little different. Halloween falls on a Saturday this year and although as of the time of this writing, most COVID-19 restrictions have been lifted, many South Floridians are still abiding by CDC guidelines. According to the CDC, there is still a risk of virus spread at holiday celebrations. They recommend avoiding high risk activities like traditional trick-or-treating, trunk-or-treat events and indoor haunted houses. Luckily, you have many other options that are much lower risk. VW South Florida is happy to help you plan a spectacular spooky celebration!

There are several drive-through haunted houses available this season:

Haunt Drive at Tree Tops Park in Davie is available October 8th through November 1st. Tickets are available for a contactless drive through experience. From the comfort and safety of your own vehicle, you can drive through immersive scary scenes. Actors will approach your vehicle, but will not touch it. The total experience lasts about 40 minutes. There are add-ons available, a “family friendly” version and an “extra bloody” version. Click here for tickets.

The Horrorland in Miramar at Miramar Regional Park is an immersive and interactive drive through in which you become the hero of a horror movie happening around you in real-time. From October 1st through October 31st, you can pass through seven differently themed passages and experience multiple horror scenes including zombies, monsters, ghosts, killer clowns and more. The experience lasts about 35 minutes. Click here for tickets.

If you’re up for a road trip, Orlando has announced a new haunted attraction called The Haunted Road. In this immersive drive-thru adventure, participants will follow Rapunzel’s journey as she leaves her tower and enters a “world of disarray”. This attraction will be open from September 25th through November 7th on Lake Pickett Road. They also offer a more family friendly version.

Another Orlando-area attraction is called Scream N’ Stream. Here, they are offering a family-friendly drive along with contactless candy for the little ones as well as a scary drive through haunt in the middle of the night. Nighttime creepy airboat tours are also offered. This attraction takes place on the property of Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures. The drive-thru haunted house is approximately 20 minutes long, the family-friendly trick or treating takes about 15 minutes and the airboat tours are about 20 minutes.

Other low-risk activities include family pumpkin carving, decorating the house, enjoying a scary-movie night, a household scavenger hunt or a virtual costume contest with friends and neighbors. Small group and outdoor activities are considered “moderate risk” by the CDC. Pumpkin patches, outdoor costume parties and one-way trick-or-treating is reasonably safe as long social distancing is achieved. Extra hand washing and and use of hand sanitizer is also recommended.

VW South Florida wishes you and yours and happy, safe and healthy Halloween. If you’re interested in a new Volkswagen with a not-so-scary payment, check out our current offers or find a location near you.

labor-day-in-quarantine

Labor Day in Quarantine

Usually, Labor Day weekend is a prime vacation weekend. After the start of a new school year here in South Florida, the long weekend is a welcome respite for many. But 2020 is different. Travel is hampered; masks are required; several of our favorite relaxation spots are closed or limited. Don’t give up, though! Here are some ideas for a fun-filled Labor Day weekend in South Florida...

Let’s start with the basics - at home activities:
You’ve probably already done or considered doing many of these items, but just in case you haven’t - or you needed a little reminder - there are plenty of fun, family-friendly, at-home activities perfect for a long weekend.

1) Puzzles. Everyone loves puzzles. Set up at your dining room table and make it a family event. A big puzzle can last all weekend. Or, if you’re on your own, consider a book of crossword puzzles or Sudoku.

2) Play a musical instrument. There are thousands of YouTube videos out there. Dust off that old flute or guitar. Or order a beginner’s instrument online and teach yourself a song or two.

3) Read a book. A good book will keep you busy turning pages all weekend. Couple it with a cup of hot cocoa or coffee and snuggle in for a relaxing read.

4) Write letters. When was the last time you received a letter in the mail? Surprise a family member with a handwritten letter or reach out to an old friend with the written word.

5) Create. Knit, paint, sculpt or build. You have crafts lying around the house, don’t you? Pick one up and let your inner-artist out. Make something on your own, or a start a larger project with your family.

6) Go on a virtual tour. So many places are offering virtual tours during quarantine. Visit the Sistine Chapel, the Natural History Museum of London, Big Bend National Park or the Cincinnati Zoo. Or visit a theme park, online... Walt Disney World and Legoland both have virtual tours available.

7) Build an obstacle course. Inside or outside. Go wild! Use pillows and furniture to create a crazy maze that you have to crawl through and jump over. Time yourself. Race your family.

8) Start a book. Write a song. Make a movie. Get your creative juices flowing. This is something you can do on your own or with your family. Who knows? Maybe you’ll go viral!

9) Binge watch. Whether it’s Netflix, Hulu or another on-demand service, a long weekend is the perfect time to curl up and binge an entire series.

10) Backyard camping. Sometimes you just have to get out of the house. Set up a tent, string some lights, enjoy some barbecue and roast some marshmallows. Backyard camping gives you a change of scenery without missing the comforts of home.

And if you actually DO want to leave your home, here are some fun South Florida ideas for getting out of the house Labor Day weekend:

1) Drive through zoo. Lion Country Safari sits on nearly 600 acres of natural area in West Palm Beach and is home to nearly 1000 animals. Drive through the four-mile safari and check out lions, giraffe, zebras, rhinos and ostrich.

2) Go fishing. There are unlimited places to cast your rod in South Florida. Whether it’s the Everglades, local beaches, public parks or canals, you can find a peaceful place to park and enjoy a day near the water. Visit takemefishing.org to find a public place near you.

3) Paddleboarding, kayaking or canoeing. No matter where you are in South Florida, you’re somewhere near the water. Spend a day getting some sun and exercise.

4) Take a drive. Go exploring. Cruise down A1A in Fort Lauderdale or Ocean Drive along South Beach. Head west to the Everglades and take in a sunset. Follow some roads you don’t normally travel and discover new places nearby.

5) Airboat tours. Speaking of the Everglades...consider an airboat tour. Speed through the mangroves and count the alligators. Many companies allow private tours, too.

So no matter what you choose to do this Labor Day weekend, stay safe and healthy! If you’re planning a road trip, a local drive or even a drive through a zoo, make sure you’re comfortable. Consider a new Volkswagen Tiguan, Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport. These German engineered SUVs are roomy and comfortable and filled with all the tech to make your drive enjoyable. Visit a dealership near you for local offers. And have a great Labor Day!

roadtrip

Florida Road Trip

Summer’s almost here and after being cooped up for weeks, a road trip sounds fantastic! You don’t have to travel far to enjoy an unforgettable vacation. VW South Florida put together some ideas for fun summer Florida road trips. This trip takes you from your home here in sunny south Florida up the east coast, across northern central Florida and finally ends in a small town in northwestern Florida. Go ahead, launch Google Maps and take a virtual ride with us!

If you’re looking for natural wonders: crystal clear springs, coral reefs and caves, head up the east coast and hit Hobe Sound first! There you’ll find Blowing Rocks Preserve on Jupiter Island, a barrier island with white sand beaches and limestone formations. You might even catch a glimpse of sea turtles. Guests of Blowing Rocks Preserve enjoy swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving - so pack your gear, or you’ll have to rent some when you arrive. You can also hike photo-worthy trails and learn about their conservation efforts at the education center.

Next stop on your trip up the coast would thrill any prospective astronomer: Merritt Island. Merritt Island is home to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, a major tourist attraction. You could meet an astronaut, enjoy the automated thrills of the Shuttle Launch Experience or explore their interactive displays. You can train like an astronaut in their simulator and take a bus tour through restricted areas. There’s a rocket garden and even an IMAX Theater. If you’re not excited about space, you might prefer the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. This wildlife conservation park is home to 21 endangered species and you’re sure to catch a few alligators.

Continue heading north along the coast and turn inland a bit to visit Ocala National Forest. Just an hour north of Orlando is a forest with more than 600 lakes, rivers and springs and the world’s largest contiguous sand pine scrub forest. It’s ideal for hiking and camping and is known for all kinds of water activities. Here you can find Juniper Springs, off State Road 40 and Alexander Springs on Lake County Road 445. These crystal clear springs are a constant temperature of 72 degrees year round and snorkeling is allowed at both. At these springs, guests picnic, paddle, swim and bird watch. It would be a fun and relaxing stop during your memorable tour of Florida.

We’re not done yet! Just 45 minutes northwest of Ocala’s National Forest is Devil’s Den! The Devil’s Den Prehistoric Spring in North Central Florida is a collapsed cave over an underground spring. It’s a unique and once-in-a-lifetime experience. Many extinct animal fossils dating back to the Pleistocene Age have been found in this cave. They are now on display at The University of Florida's Museum of Natural History. You must either snorkel or scuba dive to enter the cave, but once you’re beneath the surface, you’ll experience a beautiful new world. Devil’s Den offers lodging, an RV park, swimming pools and picnic areas so there’s plenty to do when you’re not in the caves.

If you’re looking for something a little more physically challenging, make a stop at Torreya State Park in Bristol. At this 13,735 acre Florida State Park, visitors can experience biking, boating, camping, fishing, hiking, tubing, paddling and picnicking. There is lodging available as well as campgrounds. This park features 150-foot high bluffs overlooking the Apalachicola River, hiking trails with beautiful views and a museum.

Another hour northwest, and you’ll reach Florida Caverns State Park. Enjoy an underground adventure with caverns filled with stalactites and stalagmites decorated with colored LED lighting. Entertaining and knowledgeable tour guides take you through winding pathways in colorfully lit caverns that are always a cool 65 degrees. You might encounter bats, mice, snakes and frogs but it’ll be worth it!

Finally, we come to the end of our northward trek through Florida. The final stop of our tour is just a half hour west of our previous stop. Falling Waters State Park is in a small town in northwestern Florida called Chipley. Falling Waters Sink is a 100 foot deep, 20 foot wide cylindrical pit. A small stream flows into it, dropping 73 feet to the bottom. It’s considered Florida’s highest waterfall. There’s a beautiful park with a small pond for fishing and swimming area. It’s a terrific place for picnics with gorgeous landscapes and helpful staff. Regroup and refresh in Chipley after a successful road trip.

If you’re contemplating a road trip this summer, you may want to upgrade your ride. Consider a new Volkswagen Atlas or Atlas Cross Sport. The 7-passenger and 5-passenger SUVs are loaded with convenience technology, comfortable seating and the some of the biggest available cargo spaces. Take a look at our current offers or visit a dealership near you.

scott-keogh-message

A message from Volkswagen CEO Scott Keogh

Dear Volkswagen Drivers,

I hope this note finds you well. The world has turned upside down in the past two months. People are worried about their health, their finances, their jobs, their parents, and the future. Timeless rituals like holidays or birthdays or weddings or weekend baseball or dinner out are on hold, and we're all looking for signs that it's safe to come back out again.

But in the midst of this coronavirus outbreak, we’re seeing good all around us. We’re seeing neighbors look after neighbors. We’re seeing skies clear. We’re seeing New York pause each evening to celebrate the helpers. And we’re seeing all the ways in which transportation is as essential as ever.

From hospital workers and grocery personnel, to first responders and pharmacists, to people delivering supplies to friends, family, and customers, people count on their cars to perform our country’s most vital services.

We're also essential in the lives of the people we employ. About 8,800 people in the U.S. work across the VW Group brands, at our parts warehouses and ports and at our Chattanooga factory. And when you include our dealer networks, we indirectly contribute to the livelihood of about 35,000 more in the U.S.

A lot goes into the decisions we make as a company, especially during a 100‑year storm like this one. And I wanted to take a moment to share a bit of the framework for how we’re making decisions for our customers, employees and dealers. We intend to take the long view and always consider health and safety above all else as we do our part to help keep America moving.

For Volkswagen in the U.S., this issue started relatively small in the supply chain. Within weeks, the regional crisis became global. As cities and states moved to lock down their communities, we shut down our offices March 13 and asked everyone who could work from home to do so. We followed the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to help protect the workers in our factory, our call centers and our parts distribution centers to maintain production of vehicles for people who needed one, as well as parts for repairs. Many dealers have begun to pivot to no‑touch drop offs for Service, as well as virtual walk‑arounds, no‑touch test drives, and digital signatures for purchase contracts.

As this rolling blackout shut down the biggest parts of the U.S. economy, we balanced managing a company with all of our costs and what was now a fraction of our revenue. While that business logic is simple, these decisions are about much more than cold math. I think a company has an obligation to its employees and communities as much as it does its shareholders. I also know the people who work in this company, and I know that we'll need as many of them as possible, if we're to come out on the other side of this storm more than just viable.

As the market collapsed, we had to idle the Chattanooga factory on March 21, but kept workers on full pay until April 10. Once the federal relief package took effect, we furloughed the production teams, while keeping them on full medical benefits, after paying out first‑quarter bonuses. That helped provide a cushion and let them take advantage of the expanded unemployment benefits until work resumes, which we expect to happen in early May.

For customers who've been impacted by this crisis, we worked with the tools at our disposal, helping to ease the financial stresses of owning and maintaining your vehicle. Highly qualified owners of most new VW models who finance their purchase through Volkswagen Credit can defer their first month’s payment for 180 days, with no interest for 72 months.* We also have flexible payment options for customers who've lost their job**.

We’re also serving our community by shifting gears to support essential services and workers. Along with Faurecia, which makes fabric for our seats, we’re manufacturing masks and gowns for healthcare workers and we're helping make visors in Chattanooga for area hospitals.

Many VW Dealers are in the process of repurposing their service loaners as delivery vehicles. Their employees have been bringing supplies to local food banks, carrying out food from local restaurants to customers in their homes, and making other essential deliveries.

In so many ways, life is different today from just a few weeks ago. Some of that change is unthinkable. But some of it has been magical. The commute to my coffee table takes about a minute. My wife and I can have coffee together every morning and I'm home for dinner every night. I hope you've been able to find the small but profound amid the new and chaotic in your own lives, too.

For now, be safe, be well and know that I, and all of our dealers and colleagues at Volkswagen of America, are thinking of and supporting you every day.

Sincerely,

Scott Keogh
CEO and President of Volkswagen Group of America

Everyday Heroes

These are unprecedented times: social distancing, a toilet paper shortage and a full scale global shut down. But even though we’re all self-isolating, in many ways, we’re closer than ever. In this shared crisis, everyday heroes are the ones making the difference: the health care workers and first responders, of course. But also the grocery store stockers, online teachers and delivery drivers. At VW South Florida, we just wanted to remind you that some of those everyday heroes, your neighbors and friends, are working right now at a Volkswagen dealership near you.

Our sales and service departments are still open, ensuring everyone who needs reliable transportation has reliable transportation. Our cleaning crews are working diligently to keep every facility sanitary and safe. Our lot porters and drivers are picking up and delivering vehicles for service or home deliveries so customers don’t have to risk leaving their homes. And our lending partners are ensuring fast, easy credit approvals online and by phone. Everyday heroes are changing oil and replacing tires, making sure other everyday heroes can get to where they’re needed most.

Volkswagen is also pitching in to help with unprecedented offers like 0% APR financing for up to 72 months; that’s no interest for 6 years. And, if you’re concerned about being able to make your monthly payments - we’re offering to defer payments on new purchases for up to 6 months! That’s no interest for six years and no payments for six months on most new Volkswagen models. Plus, all new 2020 VW vehicles come with two years of complimentary maintenance, so keeping your vehicle in its best condition isn’t a financial burden.

As a country, we’ve survived many catastrophes; as individuals, we’ve overcome personal adversity. What makes it easier, is having someone to lean on. Your Volkswagen dealerships of South Florida are here to help in any way we can. Stay safe and healthy and reach out to us if we can help.
