If you’re looking for a fun, free event, then this is for you! Ghoul’s Night Out Halloween Bash at American Social on Las Olas is a free costume party in Fort Lauderdale. 2020 is proving to be a big year for the auto-industry as many manufacturers aim to improve existing models. Because drivers demand more from their vehicles, automakers continue to push the envelope in affordability, space and technology.

Seeing as there have been several complaints over Ford’s 2019 Explorer model, the company debuted an all-new, redesigned 2020 Ford Explorer. Will this new design be able to compete with the new 2019 Volkswagen Atlas? Let’s see.

The new 2020 Ford Explorer remains a three-row SUV. It has a starting price of $36,675 – significantly higher than the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas’ starting MSRP of $30,895. That’s a more than $5,000 difference; shoppers can use those savings for amazing upgrades or stick with the more cost-efficient base model.

Perhaps some of the biggest changes on the 2020 Ford Explorer are its standard rear-wheel drive, available all-wheel drive, and two new trim options, including a Hybrid and more powerful ST trim. This gives it a total of 4 trim levels. The 2019 Volkswagen Atlas offers two drivetrains: front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive, and has a total of three trims.

When pitted against the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas, an SUV known for its spacious interior, here’s how the 2020 Ford Explorer stacks up:

The 2020 Ford Explorer can seat up to 7 passenger but many reviewers call out the Explorer’s third row for being cramped. Caranddriver.com says, “passengers will find that the seat is too close to the floor to be comfortable for older kids or adults.”^[1] Drivers can expect something different from the Atlas; it seats up to 7 passengers and has been praised for having third-row seating comfortable enough for adults.

The maximum cargo capacity on the new 2020 Ford Explorer is 87.8 cu.ft. While that’s a huge jump from its previous model-year, it still falls short of competitors like the Atlas, which has 96.8 cu.ft. in cargo space. 

Shoppers will, however, enjoy the plethora of technology offered in both SUVs. Impressive features like: rear view camera, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and a digital instrument panel can be found on both SUVs.
 
We can't deny it, the 2020 Ford Explorer underwent huge changes that helped it become its best yet. But it is still playing catch up to other brands. When it comes to the Toyota, you may also be dissatisfied with the lack of technology. The new SUV still doesn’t have smartphone app integration. That means no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. It’s also been noted that the controls are hard to reach because of their placement; many drivers report having to stretch to reach them. On the other hand, the Volkswagen Atlas has a beautiful cabin, a large touch screen with Apple Car Play and Android Auto as well as easily accessible dashboard controls.

The 2019 Toyota Highlander has a total of 83.7 cu. ft. of cargo space – which falls on the smaller side for its class. A better option would be the 2019 Volkswagen Atlas with a maximum of 96.8 cu. ft. of cargo space.

Forget the 2019 Toyota Highlander. This Memorial Day, consider another option. The 2019 VW Atlas makes for a better SUV for South Florida families. Volkswagen reintroduces their midsize sedan, the Passat, as newly redesigned for 2020. With both noticeable and subtle tweaks in the front, profile, rear and cabin -- the 2020 Volkswagen Passat has been upgraded with a sophisticated new look and better technology. “Passat is the only midsize sedan to offer German driving dynamics at an affordable price…” said Scott Keogh, CEO of the North American Region, Volkswagen^[1].

For 2020, Volkswagen went for a more “coupe-like” profile for the redesigned sedan. At first glance, you’ll immediately notice the 2020 Passat is sporting a new front grille --it’s a larger, flashier chrome grid. LED headlights and taillights are both standard. Thanks to its numerous new curves, lines and creases, it can easily be mistaken for a luxury brand. The Passat also sports 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels but 18 - and 19- inch are available for an even more upgraded look.

Inside the Passat, find premium tech with an “interior that features Audi-inspired MMI (multi-media interface) touch pads” according to KBB.com^[2]. You’ll be able to cruise around South Florida without ever feeling disconnected thanks to the Passat’s connectivity features. Volkswagen installed a new, glass-covered, 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and MirrorLink, now standard. It will get an EPA estimated 25 mpgs in the city and 36 mpgs on the highway.
