Basic vs. Better: 2020 Toyota Camry

The 2020 Toyota Camry is now available. It’s been applauded for its reliability and newly added driver-assistance safety technology. But that’s no surprise. Toyota has always been a pretty safe bet. But it’s also kind of boring. Sure, the Camry is one of the best-selling vehicles in America, but that means every other car on the road is a Camry. It’s generic. It’s vanilla. And it happens to be more expensive than both the 2020 Volkswagen Jetta and Passat. So why would you choose basic, when you can afford better? Test drive a German-engineered Volkswagen before you make this expensive decision.

New for 2020 on the Toyota Camry is the aforementioned safety technology including forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control and lane-departure warning. Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are also now standard in the 2020 model. (They’re both also standard in all of the new VW models.)

Reviews for the new Camry are lackluster, calling its acceleration numbers “disappointing”. The hybrid gets even worse reviews on performance. On the other hand, the Jetta, with its turbocharged engine, can go 0-60 in 7.7 seconds. The benefits of the Camry include plenty of cargo and passenger space and a comfortable ride, but that can be said about most mid-size sedans, including VW’s.

With a new 2020 Passat on the verge of release and all of the tech-forward options available in the new Jetta, why settle for standard with a generic Toyota? Consider how much time you spend in your vehicle and decide if the Camry has enough benefits to spend thousands more when you can be driving a fun and stylish, award-winning Volkswagen for less.
